Beginner Sewing Class

Learn the basics of sewing.

This group class starts at the very beginning with how to operate a sewing machine, including threading the machine, tension, common stitches.
By the end of the 4 week course you will have made several items including a hot/cold pack, a tote bag, and pants with an elastic waistband.
During the course of the class you will advance from basic sewing machine operation to sewing your first garment.

You will learn to:

  • Thread and operate the sewing machine
  • Common stitches
  • Hold a seam allowance
  • Sew straight lines
  • Backstitching
  • Change machine settings
  • Proper cutting techniques
  • Accurate measure and marking
  • Pattern Reading
  • And more

Week 1: How to thread the machine and how it operates. Learn about tension and how to adjust it. Basic common stitches and begin to practice holding seam allowance.

You will make a reusable hot/cold pack.

Week 2: Learn sewing terms as you follow directions, measuring and marking accurately, cutting, pinning and top stitching.

You will make a tote bag.

Week 3 & 4: Learn to make elastic waistband pants with basic pattern reading, determine your size, cut and construction of your project. Duration of last class is flexible to help finish your projects.

You will make pants with an elastic waistband.

Materials list will be supplied in the first class. No need to bring anything with you to the first class.
